THE ASIQUE HUSSAIN ANSARI AWARD FOR BEST CONTRIBUTING SURGEON IN NEPAL

The Society of Surgeons (SSN) on this day of 28th November, 2014 honors Professor Anjani Kumar Sharma posthumously with “The Asique Hussain Ansari Award” for contributing his entire life to developing surgery in Nepal.

Born on June 7, 1928 in the remote tarai region of Bhaluwahi in Siraha District of Nepal, he lost his mother at the tender age of 8 years. Despite his humble beginning, with dedication and perseverance, he completed his MBBS from Calcutta Medical College in 1955, MS in Surgery from Darbhanga Medical College in India and FRCS from the UK.

His journey through surgery started when there were no surgeons in Nepal and thus, he is also called the ‘Father of Surgery’ of the country. He started surgical service in Bir Hospital where he developed the Department of Surgery, while also providing service in the Kanti General Hospital. He also started the Department of Surgery in Tribhuwan University Teaching Hospital where he trained most of the surgeons. His journey with cancer started as a founder member of Nepal Cancer Relief Society, where he helped build a cancer hospital, ‘Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital’ and ended sadly with the disease taking over his life.

He was more than a doctor to his patients who got fatherly advice and more than a teacher to his students, whose hands he held and guided towards surgery.

The members of this society salute Prof. Sharma for all his contribution. May his soul rest in peace.
